The original appointment for the development of the Regional Park in Mofolo, Soweto, included environmental authorisation for the implementation of an off-stream dam and development within 500m of a wetland associated with the tributary of the Klipspruit, around the old Mofolo Cultural Bowl, a historical outdoor concert area.
The dam was never implemented, but phase 1 of the landscape development included upgrading of an existing children’s play area, the provision of an access road for deliveries of musical equipment to the stage in the park, incorporation of local mosaic artwork at the main entrance to the park, an informal soccer field and picnic and braai facilities.
Phase 2 entailed the extension of the recreational facilities with a water feature, ornamental gardens, additional children’s play equipment, paved walkways, seating areas and picnic and braai facilities.
